This year our reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s eve

was not a large and lavish meal,

but it was flavorful, delicious and full of meaning.

Miso Cod Fish

“Every Chinese family tends to serve at least one fish dish

during Chinese New Year.

“Nian Nian You Yu” means “there’s some fish every year”,

but fish in Chinese (Yu)

shares the same sound with the word ‘extra’ or ‘leftover’;

so the true meaning serving the dish really is:

“there is some (fish) leftover from the previous year, every year”.

Which always meaning money.”

Hou Xi Fatt Choy

Hou xi (dried oysters) were hidden under all those

mushrooms and fatt choy (black sea moss).

“Hou xi sounds a little like “all things” and fatt choy

sounds exactly like “to strike it rich” in Cantonese.

The name metaphorically means To Wish That Everything Will Prosper.”

Stir Fried Tung Fun + Vege + Abalone Mushroom

Can’t find a can of UNexpired abalone at the supermarket

so used abalone mushroom.

“Pen cai/Poon Choy (claypot vegetables) is a traditional Hakka claypot dish.

Pen Chai means ‘filled to the brim’. This dish signifies close family ties

as relatives get together to enjoy this hearty dish.”

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if

it is Christmas everyday?

KS: That’s very greedy of you.

Me: I’m not referring to Christmas presents.

KS: Oh really??

Me: I’m referring to Christmas Spirit.

KS: Huh?

Me: Giving with a generous heart and forgiving.

KS: Oh…

He smiled and said,

“Shall I skip your next year Christmas present

and treat you EXTREMELY good 365 days??

Me: NO!!!!!!!!!

KS: Why not?! Giving you love 365 days. That’s lots of GIVING.

That’s Christmas spirit!

Me: NO!! That’s not what I meant…

Very Belated

Taiwanese Zha Jiang Mian

recipe…

dsc07885

Ground Pork Sauce:

1. Stir fry ground pork without oil till cooked.

2. In another wok/pan, stir fry diced onion + oil till slightly brown.

3. Add the cooked ground pork.

4. Add 甜面酱 (Tian Mian Jiang) literally – Sweet noodle sauce.

I bought my 甜面酱 from a Taiwanese Supermarket and it’s called sweet bean sauce.

Some Zha Jiang Mian recipes called for Hoisin sauce

or Peking Duck Dipping Sauce

as they have a very similar taste/flavor as 甜面酱.

I was told strictly to stick to 甜面酱 to get the authentic flavor

but how to choose a good one when there’s more than 4 different

brands of 甜面酱??!

So I eeny meeny miny mo

and chose one from Hsin Tung Yang.

Anyway…

5. Add white pepper + dark soy sauce + rock sugar + water.

6. Simmer the ground pork sauce for 15 to 20 mins (low fire).

7. Add some fried garlic + garlic oil.

8. Pour unto cooked noodle + vege of your choice.

Enjoy!
